A new report indicates a significant increase in the use of car hire among UK public sector organisations, such as local authorities, health trusts and central government. The analysis from Enterprise Rent-A-Car finds that public sector organisations are increasingly making use of daily rental services, as well as hourly car hire via car sharing schemes. The growth demonstrates the success of the partnership with Government Procurement Services, designed to address long-standing attitudes toward "grey fleet" use in the public sector. An increase in the number of rental days also suggests public sector employees are proactively seeking the use of a hire car as opposed to driving their own vehicles with arranged mileage reimbursement. The Government Procurement Services tick several boxes, including reducing the administrative burden of self-regulated mileage reclaim schemes and the reduction of carbon footprints. Oz Choudri, head of public sector at Enterprise Rent-A-Car, said: "The public sector is at the cutting edge of pushing through better, more economical and sustainable solutions for keeping employees mobile. Public sector workers are very much in a service sector and many are required to travel as part of their work, so mobility is key. "Public sector bodies are using cars in a variety of ways _ by the hour, by the day, or for longer periods of a month or more _ to provide flexibility and convenience for employees while increasing compliance and cost efficiencies for organisations. It's helping to change some entrenched behaviours, such as mileage reimbursement, by offering a viable and easy to use alternative."
