With winter firmly on the horizon and the likely icy weather it will bring, fleet operators are being advised to prepare for the wintry onslaught by the Freight Transport Association (FTA). Salt stocks are already being replenished for the upcoming cold snap and the Met Office has moved to team up with the highway authorities to provide motorists and fleets with the highest level of information in anticipation for the next few months. The authorities have already developed a new robust information system designed to inform travellers and fleet operators of approaching weather fronts that could have dangerous consequences to regional and national road networks across the UK. Malcolm Bingham, head of road network management policy at the FTA, said: "Up to three years ago there was a whole generation of drivers which had never experienced severe weather conditions, but in 2010 and 2011 many learned that going out on UK roads when winter can hit suddenly is not advisable without taking sensible precautions. "Insufficient preparation can lead to lives being put at risk, people stranded for uncomfortable lengths of time, and emergency services becoming stretched." In addition to keeping drivers abreast of relevant weather information, it is essential to properly prepare all road vehicles for the stresses and strains of winter driving. Fleet operators are now encouraged to make their own decisions rather than implementing a nationwide policy. Winter tyres and snow chains are some of the main actions for operators to consider for drivers who travel in areas where the weather can be very cold and dangerous. The new information system devised by highway authorities should give drivers a better ideas of when and where to be prepared for extreme weather conditions. Bingham added: "This year highway authorities are asking for drivers to be made aware when gritters are operating. The new method used by the national authorities is to spread salt in a brine solution, which is more accurate in its spread." Will your business be operating a fleet over the winter months?
